Chapter 8 Becoming a Hero
Chapter 8 Becoming a Hero
Back in his dorm, Chen Yu watched Wang Wenwen walk gracefully away along the campus path, then thought of the sweet-looking Zhong Xiaoqin, and for a moment, he was undecided. The strongest ability of a time traveler is their understanding of the plot, but Wang Wenwen hadn't appeared in the story—or perhaps she'd been seen as a passerby on the street. After much deliberation, Chen Yu decided to take it one step at a time, first gathering information and assessing the situation before making any plans.
Turning to look at his three diligently studying roommates, Chen Yu smiled slightly. This dorm was different from others; there was no brotherhood, no petty squabbles, and the four maintained a normal classmate relationship. Of the three, initially only Sun Jian was diligent, determined to take the postgraduate entrance exam, but later he inspired the other two to work hard as well. Chen Yu felt that if no women dragged them down, the three wouldn't fail.
As for Wang Wenwen's worry about the local specialties being divided up, that worry was completely unfounded. Chen Yu was quite satisfied with sharing a dorm room with these three. He could thank them in advance for sparing his life.
In the days that followed, Chen Yu and Gu Jia and Zhong Xiaoqin didn't meet at the stadium many times. Each time they met, they would just exchange a quick greeting before going about their own business. It wasn't until the event successfully concluded that Chen Yu received a call from Gu Jia, "Chen Yu, we're going back early the day after tomorrow. Do you have time? We'd like to treat you to a meal."
"How can I let you treat me? I'm practically a local! Have you ever climbed the Great Wall? How about I take you two up the Great Wall?" Chen Yu felt that going out for fun and just eating wasn't enough.
“Okay, we’ve never been to the Great Wall before, and we don’t have anything to do tomorrow, so let’s go climb the Great Wall.” Gu Jia and Zhong Xiaoqin discussed it quietly before giving Chen Yu their answer.
"Okay, let's meet at the same subway station as last time tomorrow morning, is that alright?"
"Okay, let's make it nine o'clock tomorrow. I'll be there on time." Chen Yu and Gu Jia didn't dawdle; they quickly settled the major and minor details and ended the call.
Chen Yu was a bit far away, but he arrived ten minutes early. After waiting for five minutes, Gu Jia and Zhong Xiaoqin arrived as well. Chen Yu was very satisfied with their sense of time.
"Have you had breakfast yet? There's a breakfast shop over there; if you haven't, you can go and grab a bite," Chen Yu asked the two, pointing to Yunying's breakfast.
"We've already eaten, let's go!" Zhong Xiaoqin said.
The subway wasn't suitable for this trip, so the three of them took a taxi. Chen Yu took the front passenger seat, while Gu Jia and Zhong Xiaoqin sat in the back. With the driver present, it wasn't convenient for them to chat. Perhaps Gu Jia and Zhong Xiaoqin hadn't rested well and weren't in the mood for conversation, so they remained silent the entire way.
After driving for more than an hour, they finally arrived at the ticket office of the scenic spot. Chen Yu paid and got out of the car. Feeling shaken from the ride, he quickly stretched. His shirt was short enough to reveal part of his abdomen. His eight-pack abs, which he had developed through long-term exercise, were particularly eye-catching to Zhong Xiaoqin, who quickly turned her head away.
Fortunately, Chen Yu had rested well and came over to say, "You all stay here and don't move around. I'm going to buy some oranges and tickets while I'm at it!"
Gu Jia wasn't about to be taken advantage of. "That line sounds strangely familiar, Chen Yu. Does it sound familiar too?"
"Does that sound familiar? That's probably because Gu Jia is studying too much. But don't wander off, or we won't be able to find you later."
After buying tickets and going to the Great Wall, the two girls realized that although it was magnificent and spectacular, climbing it wasn't very interesting. Chen Yu instantly understood their thoughts and asked, "Do you know who came up with the saying, 'He who has not climbed the Great Wall is not a true man'?"
"I haven't really looked into this before. Who is it?" Zhong Xiaoqin blinked her big, cute eyes, looking rather silly and adorable.
Chen Yu couldn't bear to look any longer, afraid he wouldn't be able to resist rushing over and pinching her cheek. "It was written by a great leader in a poem called 'Qing Ping Yue'. The Great Wall has great significance in our country. It wasn't originally built during the Qin Dynasty, but rather during the Spring and Autumn Period when the State of Qi began construction. There's a legend that Meng Jiangnu actually lived during the Spring and Autumn Period."
Gu Jia joined the chat group: "This is too revolutionary. Isn't it said that Meng Jiangnu cried all the way to the Great Wall of Qin?"
“We know it’s just a rumor, and rumors aren’t always accurate. The story of Meng Jiangnu crying at the Great Wall gradually evolved into the version we’re familiar with starting from the Yuan Dynasty, and it seems the melody even changed. Besides, these kinds of revolutionary facts aren’t just one or two; there are far too many of them,” Chen Yu said, feigning erudition.
"For example, the Great Wall. Everyone says that the battlements were for launching arrows, and that's how it's portrayed in TV dramas. While that's true, it's not entirely accurate. In fact, since the Ming Dynasty, there has always been the presence of hand grenades in the long battles of the Great Wall. They weren't called by that name before, but the principle is the same. It's just that officers didn't pay much attention to them, otherwise there would definitely have been significant development."
For example, there's a rumor that the Great Wall looks like a winding dragon from space. While I acknowledge the Great Wall has symbolic significance, it's actually invisible to the naked eye on satellite cloud images. It becomes visible when magnified, but it has absolutely nothing to do with a winding dragon.
Gu Jia and Zhong Xiaoqin were both shocked. Zhong Xiaoqin said, "So we've been living in a world like this all along?"
Chen Yu thought to himself: The information age has only just begun. The next few years will be the year of information explosion!
The rest of the tour was a walk, with Chen Yu acting as a temporary tour guide, giving a haphazard explanation that was half true and half false, until we climbed to the highest beacon tower.
"Wow, it's really spectacular!" Gu Jia couldn't help but exclaim.
Pointing to the scenery in the distance, Chen Yu introduced to them, "This is one of the famous scenic spots of the Great Wall, where you can overlook the beautiful mountain scenery and the magnificent wall."
Zhong Xiaoqin took out her phone and kept taking pictures. "This place is so beautiful, I want to take more pictures."
The three of them chatted and enjoyed the scenery, and before they knew it, they had reached a rather steep section of the road.
"Be careful, it's a bit steep here," Chen Yu warned. Gu Jia and Zhong Xiaoqin walked cautiously, when suddenly, Zhong Xiaoqin's foot slipped, and she fell backward.
"Ah!" she exclaimed. Chen Yu reacted quickly, grabbing Zhong Xiaoqin's shoulder and pulling her back into his arms.
"Are you alright?" Gu Jia and Chen Yu asked at the same time.
"It's nothing," Zhong Xiaoqin said, taking a step back from Chen Yu's embrace, her face flushed. "Thank you."
"It's alright, just be careful. There are many steps here, and they've all been worn smooth. If you don't step carefully, this will happen." Chen Yu hesitated for a moment, but still said, "If you're worried about slipping again, I can hold your hand and help you across this section."
