Years turn into wind

Chapter 191 Silent Tenderness

Chapter 191 Silent Tenderness

The atmosphere in the infirmary at the Marshal's residence was quiet yet tense. Cheng Yuwei carefully tended to Ling Xiaotian's shoulder wound, her slender fingers pinching the gauze. Though her movements were gentle, they faintly trembled.

"Does it hurt?" She looked up, a look of uneasiness in her eyes.

"It's okay, you were very gentle," Ling Xiaotian replied softly, his tone soothing. He was used to the pain of battle, but at this moment, he couldn't help but feel a little soft because of her concern.

Cheng Yuwei didn't relax. She carefully sprinkled the powder on the wound and bandaged it gently, still muttering in a low voice: "You are always so stubborn. What if something goes wrong..."

"I'm fine, don't be so nervous." Ling Xiaotian interrupted her with a smile, trying to calm her down.

But she suddenly stopped, looked up at him, her eyes red: "Do you know what I'm thinking? Every time I hear that you're going to fight, I'm scared to death. I'm afraid you'll be like those soldiers who never returned..."

Ling Xiaotian's smile faded, and his expression turned serious. He reached out and took her hand, his voice low and firm: "Yuwei, I promised you that you would come back safely. I did it this time, and I will do it next time."

She was silent for a moment, but her eyes finally turned red, and she said in a hoarse voice: "But you are my sky. What should I do if you collapse?"

These words pierced Ling Xiaotian's heart like a sharp arrow. He took a deep breath, pulled her into his arms, and gently patted her back with all his tenderness: "Silly girl, I will be fine, I swear."

Late-night dependence

As the night deepened, the General's Mansion gradually quieted down. Cheng Yuwei sat in the study, holding a book in her hand, but she couldn't concentrate at all. Her heart was still restless from the fierce battle during the day.

After an unknown amount of time, the study door was gently pushed open. Ling Xiaotian stood at the door, leaning against the door frame, with a helpless smile on his face: "It's so late and you're still not asleep, waiting for me?"

She looked up at him and replied calmly, "I can't sleep."

Ling Xiaotian walked in, took the book from her hand, and sat down beside her: "Since you can't sleep, let's talk."

Cheng Yuwei remained silent, her eyes downcast. Ling Xiaotian sighed, reached out and pinched her cheek, and said like coaxing a child, "You're imagining things again. Do you think I won't be with you for long?"

Cheng Yuwei raised her head and looked at him with complicated eyes: "I'm not imagining things, you're always living on the edge of a knife, how can I not worry?"

Ling Xiaotian was silent for a moment, then reached out and pulled her into his arms, saying softly, "Yuwei, I know what you're afraid of. But the war will eventually end. I promise that once everything is settled, I will stay with you and never leave."

"Are you serious?" She looked up at him, a hint of doubt in her tone.

"Really." He lowered his head and kissed her forehead gently, "You have to believe me."

Cheng Yuwei's heart finally settled down a little. She leaned on his chest, listening to his heartbeat, and felt that this warmth was more real than any promise in the world.

The next day's sunshine

In the early morning, sunlight streamed into the house through the curtains. Cheng Yuwei got up early and personally went to the kitchen to make breakfast for Ling Xiaotian.

When Ling Xiaotian walked into the restaurant, he saw a bowl of steaming chicken noodle soup and a few exquisite side dishes on the table.

"What good day is today?" He raised his eyebrows and looked at her with a smile on his face.

Cheng Yuwei glanced at him and said in a light tone: "Weren't you injured yesterday? I want you to heal it."

Ling Xiaotian felt warm in his heart and pulled out a chair to sit down: "Then I must enjoy it."

He picked up the chopsticks and took a bite, his eyes full of praise: "It tastes good, you are worthy of being my wife."

Cheng Yuwei couldn't help laughing when she heard this: "I knew you were sweet-mouthed. Eat it quickly, it won't be good if it gets cold."

Ling Xiaotian smiled and nodded, secretly observing her expression while eating. Seeing her brows relaxed and a faint smile on her face, his heart also became relieved.

Warmth in calm

For the next few days, the Marshal's Mansion returned to a brief period of peace. Ling Xiaotian handed most of the affairs to his adjutant and made time to spend with Cheng Yuwei every day.

Sometimes they would walk together in the garden, chatting about trivial matters; sometimes they would read together in the study, even discussing some chemistry knowledge. Cheng Yuwei would occasionally tease him: "Are you not afraid of being laughed at by others for studying chemistry, warlord commander?"

Ling Xiaotian replied seriously, "Didn't you say that chemistry can change the world? I don't want to fall behind."

Cheng Yuwei couldn't help laughing after hearing this: "Okay, then I'll teach you."

Every day in the Marshal's Mansion was filled with warmth and laughter, as if the war outside was far away from them. However, such peaceful days were always short-lived.
