Chapter 256 The Chase!
Chapter 256 The Chase!
Several high-ranking officers were tied to chairs with rags stuffed in their mouths, while the communications soldiers fared even worse, bound hand and foot and gagged as well, tossed haphazardly on the ground like pigs tied up for the New Year. For a moment, the soldiers who entered wondered if they were seeing things. They rubbed their eyes, and sure enough, it was real. They quickly ran over and untied the officers.
Once the restraints were removed, the soldiers asked with concern.
"Commander, are you...are you alright?"
The commander was furious. He'd been tied up for most of the night and was seething with anger. He was just asking for trouble.
"Are you blind? Do you think we're alright? Huh!"
They vented their anger on the soldiers. As the highest decision-makers in the Blue Army, they were wiped out by four ordinary Red Army soldiers who broke into the command center. If this got out, their lifelong reputation would be ruined.
"What are you all good for? The Red Army has already infiltrated the command center, and you haven't noticed for so long? You're not even as good as pigs..."
He started swearing and cursing, spitting everywhere!
"Old Li, forget it!"
The high-ranking officer, a lieutenant general, waved his hand to interrupt, stretched his arms, and, with a grim expression, directly gave the order to the communications soldier who had been untied.
"Immediately send a telegram to all participating units below, dispatching all mobile personnel to set up roadblocks at all checkpoints. The four enemy soldiers who broke into the command center must be intercepted and captured. Two of them are about 1.8 meters tall, and the other two are slightly shorter... They are wearing my Blue Army armbands. They must be thoroughly questioned. If any suspicious persons are encountered, arrest them first and then interrogate them. If anyone is negligent and lets them escape, they will be court-martialed."
The communications officer immediately went to send a telegram. The commander-in-chief stared at the leftover chicken bones scattered haphazardly on the command table, his hands clenched tightly at his sides, veins bulging on his forehead. As a veteran of countless battles, even fighting the Americans in the Korean War, he had never felt so humiliated, having been defeated by a few ordinary soldiers. Even the most composed man had broken down at this moment.
At this moment, there was only one thought: even if the Blue Army lost the exercise, we had to capture these four bastards and teach them a lesson. This was the top priority and the only task.
The entire Blue Force army group sped into action. Inside the off-road vehicles speeding across the wilderness, Zhong Yuemin and his three companions were tossed about like on a roller coaster. The vehicles scraped the ground several times, but thankfully they were military vehicles, sturdy and durable. If they had been in ordinary sedans, they probably would have been totaled long ago.
Zhang Haiyang gripped the handrail with both hands.
"Yuemin, slow down, you bastard. My bones are about to fall apart. What's there to be afraid of? These idiots from the Blue Army, we sneaked into the command center, tied up all the leaders, and let them eat, drink, and rest for hours without them noticing. They're even less likely to catch us now."
"Don't be careless!"
Zhong Yuemin kept the accelerator floored.
"I reckon the Blue Team has probably found out by now. If you were the commander, what would you do next?"
Zhang Haiyang said, "Stop them with all our might, regardless of life or death!"
They do have self-awareness.
The off-road vehicles traversed the wilderness. They had previously penetrated 60-70 kilometers into the heart of the Blue Army's territory, and now they had no choice but to flee for their lives. Once they reached the Red Army's positions, they would be safe. Around 4 a.m., a sliver of dawn appeared on the distant horizon. Having passed three checkpoints without incident, they were only a dozen kilometers away from safety when another roadblock appeared ahead, set up on a few wooden planks across a ditch. There were quite a few people there, and the vehicles could only pass over the two- or three-meter-wide planks.
"Yuemin, what should we do?"
The man in the back seat spoke up.
Zhong Yuemin said in a deep voice, "Be prepared. If anything goes wrong, leave immediately."
The car slowly drove over and stopped by the ditch. A Blue Army soldier got out and scanned the car.
"Which unit are you from? State the number of this exercise so we can verify it."
"Comrade, the four of us are from the first action team of the reconnaissance company under the ?? Department, and we are ordered to go and investigate the latest movements of the Red Army."
Zhong Yuemin replied calmly that the number was not given randomly. It was obtained from his conversation with the "friendly forces" when he accompanied the prisoner-of-war vehicle to the Blue Army command post. He had extracted information about several members of the group and confirmed that such an action team did exist. He had successfully passed through the previous three checkpoints by impersonating someone else.
"Wait a moment, we need to check this!"
They went to the radio station to contact them, but received no response for a long time. The four of them waited anxiously, and Man Tun whispered:
"Yuemin, something seems off."
Zhang Haiyang gritted his teeth and said:
"If all else fails, just drive straight there. It's only a dozen kilometers away. I don't believe they can catch up with us."
"Why are you going in? Didn't you see there are spikes on the ground? If you go over there, your tires will get punctured. Let's wait a bit..."
As soon as he finished speaking, Zhong Yuemin saw the soldier who had been contacting them via radio whispering something to two other soldiers. His expression was solemn. After he finished speaking, the two soldiers tightened their grip on their weapons, exchanged a glance with the other soldiers beside them, and then the group subtly moved towards their vehicle.
"This has exposed us," Zhong Yuemin muttered.
"Sit tight!"
The car wasn't turned off; it was put in reverse, the accelerator was floored, and it quickly reversed, then fishtailed, making a 180-degree U-turn in one smooth motion. The engine roared, and it sped away, leaving behind a cloud of dust and furious shouts of exasperation.
"Chase them! These four are Red Army spies. Don't let any of them escape! Chase them!"
Two SUVs followed closely behind, with one passenger in the front seat simultaneously making communications via radio.
"Target found, target found, in..."
"groove!"
Zhang Haiyang slapped his seat, looking at the Blue Army vehicles hot on his heels. Just this one section was enough; once they got past it would be safe. But then this went wrong.
"Yuemin, what do we do now? Should we fight them?"
"Use your brain, why are you fighting like this?" Zhong Yuemin nodded his chin forward.
"See that bend? When the vehicle turns, I'll slow down. The three of you jump out immediately, find a place to hide, and once the Blue Army has passed, head in the opposite direction. It's only about ten kilometers away. Keep going, and you'll be safe once you reach the Red Army's position."
"Then what will you do?"
“I’ll use a diversionary tactic to lure them away from their base. Don’t worry, the Blue Army doesn’t have the ability to catch me, Zhong Yuemin.”
"Brother Zhong, how about I drive and I'll distract them?" Ning Wei said from the back seat.
"Let's forget about camaraderie now. Just do as I say and get ready!"
The car sped along, executing a beautiful drift as it rounded a corner, slowing down slightly.
"Right now!"
Without hesitation, the three men opened the car door and jumped out. They rolled on the spot to dissipate the force and quickly hid in a ditch overgrown with weeds. The car continued to speed forward, and the two SUVs that were chasing closely behind soon caught up around the bend, but they did not notice Zhang Haiyang and the other two hiding in the ditch.
