Chapter 1686 - 1624: Wufu Returns

Chapter 1686 - 1624: Wufu Returns

At the end of November in Changan City, snow suddenly began to fall, flake by flake, onto rooftops, along the long streets, on people’s hair and shoulders.

"It’s snowing!" The soldier guarding the city gate raised his head and reached out to catch a snowflake.

This was the first snow of the year, and very soon, the snowflakes began to fall densely, covering everything in sight.

There was the sound of urgent hoofbeats coming from outside the city, and the soldier glanced over to see two fine horses galloping one after the other into the city. Before he could react, both horses and riders had disappeared from view.

"Hey, those rascals haven’t even presented their travel documents..."

The soldier had just started to speak when another fine horse approached, the rider at the front raising a token high and shouting, "County Magistrate Ruifu is approaching, please give way."

The soldier was pulled aside by his companion and stepped back, allowing the horses behind to gallop into the city.

In less than an hour, the first of the fine horses had already returned to the side gate of the Changqing Residence. The rider dismounted with a stumble and fell to the ground.

"Wufu!"

Ah Jiu leapt from another horse and helped her up.

"I’m fine." Wufu’s face was pale as snow, devoid of any trace of blood. The days of hurried journeys at top speed had pushed her to her limits, especially after having recently exchanged Half Body Blood.

Ah Jiu supported her entire body within his arms, guiding her forward to knock on the door.

Behind them, a carriage arrived, and upon seeing the pair, its occupants were both shocked and joyful.

"Wufu, Prince Jin?"

The voice was filled with urgency, and Wufu turned to see Wu Lihong adjusting his clothes and official cap. She then turned her head back, not replying.

Wufu remained silent, and so did Ah Jiu, merely nodding haughtily.

The door was opened from inside, and a small servant peeked out. Upon seeing Wufu, he paused for a moment but quickly gathered his wits.

"County Lord." His eyes widened as he promptly ran towards the inner courtyard, shouting, "The County Lord is back, the lady is back!"

Wufu stepped inside the door, quickly heading toward the inner courtyard.

Meanwhile, at Madam Zhou’s side, everyone held their breath, not daring to make a sound. Some maidservants and old matrons even clasped their hands together in prayer.

"Imperial Physician, Miss, this truly isn’t working." Midwife Ma once again knelt on the ground.

The fetal position still couldn’t be corrected, and more worryingly, the baby’s hand was stuck in the birth canal; she had even seen the tiny fingers.

Purple Jade, feeling weak, turned to Imperial Physician Xu: "Senior Imperial Physician, what should we do?"

Imperial Physician Xu sighed, "Let’s administer another bowl of labor-inducing medicine. We have delayed long enough, and we’ll just have to leave it to fate."

Madam Zhou’s eyes were bloodshot, imploringly looking at Imperial Physician Xu. She truly had no strength left for speaking. More importantly, she felt something slipping away, as her vision blurred.

"The lady is back."

Suddenly, someone outside shouted, sending a surge of hope through everyone’s hearts.

Purple Jade froze, quickly stepping to the window. Through the window paper, she indeed saw a slender figure walking into the courtyard, approaching the house.

"Madam, the lady is back!" Purple Jade swiftly turned around, kneeling before Madam Zhou, urgently saying, "The lady has returned. Please hold on a little longer."

Madam Zhou’s lips quivered, her neck stiffly turned to face the doorway as someone opened the door and walked in. Yet the bitter cold and snow on her prevented her from approaching right away.

"Mother, I’ve returned. Don’t be afraid!" Wufu approached the fire basin near the door, removed her large cloak, warmed herself by the fire, and then went over.
