Chapter 38 Gu Lin is sick
Chapter 38 Gu Lin is sick
Zheng Hao immediately regained his senses. He got up without even putting on his coat and ran in despite the cold. He saw that Gu Lin's originally fair face on the bed had turned bright red.
Zheng Hao's heart sank. He stepped forward and touched the other person's forehead, finding it extremely hot to the touch.
His expression was grave; Uncle Gu had a fever.
In ancient times, fever was not a trivial matter; many people lost their lives due to a cold.
Zheng Hao dared not be careless. After getting dressed, he immediately went to call Sister Zhao.
Zhao's sister-in-law was a light sleeper, and she immediately got up after hearing Zheng Hao's voice through the door.
She dressed and ran out, asking, "Xiao Hao, what's wrong? Did something happen to Lin Ge'er?"
"Uncle Gu has a fever."
Zheng Hao's expression was solemn, but he calmly said to Zhao's wife, "Auntie, could you please use a cloth soaked in cold water to wipe Uncle Gu's body to lower his fever? I'll go find a doctor."
"you go?!"
Upon hearing that Zheng Hao was going to go out to find a doctor alone in the middle of the night, Sister Zhao exclaimed in surprise and stopped him, saying, "No, you're so young, I'll go."
Zheng Hao looked at her, his childish face slightly serious, and said, "Auntie, Uncle Gu's temperature is very high right now and needs to be brought down quickly. Only you can wipe Uncle Gu's body here. I'll go find a doctor and bring him back."
After saying that, Zheng Hao left without waiting for Zhao's wife's response.
Watching the departing teenager, Zhao's wife gritted her teeth slightly and finally went into Gu Lin's house.
Gu Lin felt very hot; there was no part of him that wasn't hot, from his cheeks to the soles of his feet.
He kept kicking the blanket off himself, but it kept coming back over him.
Gu Lin sometimes felt as if he touched something icy cold, but after a while, the coldness would disappear.
In his hazy consciousness, Gu Lin seemed to be lifted up and something hard was stuffed into his mouth.
He tasted something bitter and clenched his teeth, unwilling to eat, but then he vaguely heard a familiar voice in his ear: "Uncle Gu... Uncle Gu, it's time to take your medicine."
Gu Lin's eyelids were too heavy to open, but his teeth slowly loosened.
The sour and bitter taste of the herbal medicine gradually filled his mouth. In his sleep, Gu Lin mumbled incoherently, "Bitter...no...water..."
Zheng Hao paused in his act of feeding Gu Lin the medicine. Seeing Gu Lin's flushed face and furrowed brows, he got up and poured a glass of warm water.
"Uncle Gu, have some water."
Gu Lin obediently opened his mouth slightly, and after the warm water entered his mouth to dilute the bitterness of the medicine, Gu Lin felt that his mouth was no longer bitter.
However, due to the effects of the drug, Gu Linyuan was already disoriented, and his dizzy mind became even more confused. He was extremely sleepy and fell into a deep sleep.
Gu Lin didn't know how long he had slept; he only felt as if he had been asleep in the darkness for a long time.
During this dream, he dreamt of many people and things, but forgot them after waking up.
Although he had forgotten, Gu Lin still remembered that the people and things in his dream did not give him a good feeling, because he felt depressed whenever he thought of them.
"Uncle Gu, you're awake?"
Looking at the person on the bed whose eyes were closed but whose eyelashes were trembling slightly, Zheng Hao got up from the bedside and went closer.
Gu Lin has a habit every time he wakes up: he likes to lie in bed with his eyes closed and rest for a while after waking up.
Upon suddenly hearing Zheng Hao's voice in his room, Gu Lin immediately opened his eyes and saw Zheng Hao standing by his bedside, slightly surprised: "Xiao Hao?"
He was somewhat bewildered: "What are you doing here?"
Zheng Hao said, "Uncle Gu, you suddenly developed a fever last night. My aunt and I were worried about you, so we took turns taking care of you. The doctor examined you and prescribed some medicine. How are you feeling now?"
After hearing Zheng Hao's words, Gu Lin realized why he had felt sore all over and had a dry, sore throat when he woke up early in the morning. It turned out that he had a fever.
Gu Lin shook his head slightly and said, "I'm fine."
Zheng Hao carefully observed Gu Lin's complexion. Seeing that although the other man's face was pale, his spirit and appearance were not as listless as they had been the night before, he said, "I'll go and bring Uncle Gu his breakfast first. After Uncle Gu finishes eating, he can drink his medicine directly."
Gu Lin also felt his stomach was empty and he was a little hungry, so he nodded and said, "Okay."
Zheng Hao returned shortly after he left.
At this moment, Gu Lin had changed from lying on the bed to sitting on it. Zheng Hao looked at Gu Lin's still somewhat pale face and asked, "Uncle Gu, do you need me to feed you?"
Gu Lin, who had already reached out to take the food, suddenly had a flash of inspiration and looked up at Zheng Hao, who was standing by the bed, asking, "Did you feed me the medicine last night?"
Zheng Hao nodded and said, "Originally, your aunt was supposed to feed you, but Uncle Gu was lying in bed and needed someone to help him up, so your aunt went to help you, and I fed you the medicine."
After hearing Zheng Hao's explanation, Gu Lin could imagine how hard Zheng Hao and Sister-in-law Zhao had worked to take care of him when he had a fever last night. He guessed that the two of them hadn't gotten a good night's rest because of taking care of him.
"Thank you for your hard work," Gu Lin said sincerely.
Zheng Hao's expression was serious and calm: "Uncle Gu, there's no need to thank me. This is what I should do."
This was Zheng Hao's true thought. Uncle Gu provided him with food, clothing, shelter, and transportation without any worries, and treated him with utmost sincerity and kindness. Therefore, it was only right for Zheng Hao to take care of Uncle Gu when he was sick.
Unsure of what Zheng Hao was thinking, Gu Lin didn't continue with any formalities and accepted the food.
When he saw that his breakfast consisted of only a bowl of plain porridge, he looked up at Zheng Hao, his expression and eyes filled with doubt.
"Is there nothing else for breakfast besides plain porridge?"
Zheng Hao explained, "Uncle Gu is still ill and needs to avoid certain foods. Let's keep his diet light for the next few days."
Upon hearing Zheng Hao's words, Gu Lin's expression immediately wilted.
But he wasn't willful. He was able to live a healthy life as an orphan from childhood to adulthood, not only because of the care he received from the orphanage staff, but also because he took great care of his body.
Gu Lin lowered his head and drank the white porridge. Although there were no other side dishes, his stomach, which was used to eating oily food, suddenly felt a unique comfort when it came into contact with the light porridge.
Moreover, Gu Lin didn't know if it was just his imagination, but he felt that the rice in this era tasted better than that in modern times. Although the white rice in this era was not as plump and translucent as that in modern times, it had a very strong aroma.
In particular, because Aunt Zhao was taking care of the sick Gu Lin and worried that his stomach might not be able to digest the food well, she specially stewed the rice porridge for a long time. So when Gu Lin ate the white rice porridge, he felt that the grains of rice were melting in his mouth.
Gu Lin ate the white rice porridge one mouthful after another, and soon finished it.
After Gu Lin finished his breakfast, Zheng Hao picked up the prepared medicinal soup and brought it over.
Gu Lin looked at the dark, murky medicinal soup and instantly recalled the sour and bitter taste in his mouth last night. However, he was currently ill and difficult to cure. If he did not take Chinese medicine, his condition would likely not improve.
Gu Lin took the medicinal soup from Zheng Hao, raised his hand, tilted his head back, and drank it all in one gulp.
Zheng Hao took the empty medicine bowl. Gu Lin rinsed his mouth with water to wash away the bitterness, then looked at Zheng Hao and said, "I'm fine now. You can go to school."
Although Zheng Hao had been taking care of him and hadn't mentioned this matter, Gu Lin knew why Zheng Hao was at home today, since it wasn't a day off.
After tidying up the bowls for different purposes, Zheng Hao said to Gu Lin, "Uncle Gu, don't worry, I have already asked the teacher for leave."
Even after hearing that the other party had asked for leave, Gu Lin's expression did not relax.
But seeing the dark circles under Zheng Hao's eyes, Gu Lin felt a pang of heartache. In the end, he didn't say anything more and said, "I don't have anything to do here. You should go and get some sleep."
Zheng Hao did not want to agree to Gu Lin's advice.
Because Gu Lin's condition is currently unstable, he and Aunt Zhao took turns taking care of Gu Lin last night. Throughout the night, Gu Lin's body temperature fluctuated wildly. When he was hot, his whole body felt like a furnace, and when he was cold, his hands and feet felt like ice blocks, which frightened Aunt Zhao so much that her face turned blue.
Seeing Gu Lin lying on the bed shivering from the cold, Zhao's wife quickly brought over all the clean blankets in the house and covered Gu Lin with them, layer by layer.
Even though he was covered with five layers of blankets, Gu Lin's hands and feet were still ice-cold. Zhao's wife anxiously turned to Zheng Hao and said, "Xiao Hao, quickly go up and warm Uncle Gu's hands and feet."
Upon hearing Zhao's words, Zheng Hao hesitated slightly, but when he saw the young man lying on the bed with a flushed face and dry, chapped lips, Zheng Hao immediately abandoned the idea of maintaining proper boundaries between men and women, took off his shoes and socks, and got into bed.
As soon as Zheng Hao got into bed, he felt as if he had entered a frozen wasteland.
Despite being covered with a thick quilt, Gu Lin's body was still as cold as ice. The entire bed was devoid of warmth, and Gu Lin was shivering so much that he almost curled up into a ball.
"Xiao Hao, quickly hug your Uncle Gu tight! We can't let him get cold any longer."
Upon hearing this, Zheng Hao lowered his head slightly and attempted to pick up Gu Lin.
In recent months, Zheng Hao has been eating and sleeping well and has become much stronger. However, in front of Gu Lin, who is nearly twenty years old, Zheng Hao's height only reaches about chest level. But he is strong and can easily lift Gu Lin up.
He held Gu Lin in his arms, gently warming his cold hands and feet.
Young people are most hot-tempered, especially strong and healthy boys like Zheng Hao. Soon, Gu Lin, who was unconscious, felt as if he had entered a warm wooden house from a snowy wilderness.
But after half an hour, Zheng Hao felt the person in his arms gradually getting warmer and starting to wriggle.
Gu Lin was breathing heavily, his breath hot, and the black hair on his fair face was damp with sweat.
He kept kicking at the bedding on his body, while Zhao's wife had already been persuaded to go to sleep by Zheng Hao.
So Zheng Hao pressed Gu Lin down to lie down, and then took away the extra blankets from him.
After realizing that the blankets were less thick and his body wasn't as hot, Gu Lin stopped making a scene.
He lay sprawled on the bed, occasionally kicking the blankets, but Zheng Hao had already tucked them in. So, after Gu Lin realized he couldn't kick the blankets anymore, he gradually calmed down.
However, this was only temporary. Gu Lin, who had a fever, fussed intermittently throughout the night until the early hours of the morning when the night watchmen sounded the alarm. Only then did Gu Lin finally calm down and fall into a deep sleep.
But Zheng Hao didn't sleep a wink all night.
Seeing that Zheng Hao was unwilling to go back to his room to rest, Gu Lin said helplessly, "I have a soft couch in my room. You can sleep there. If I need anything, I'll just call you. You can hear me from outside."
Zheng Hao pondered for a moment, thinking that he would have to continue taking care of Gu Lin that night, and it would be best to take advantage of the daytime to be well-rested, so he said, "Okay, I'll go to the outer room to take a nap. Call me if Uncle Gu needs anything."
Seeing that he had finally persuaded the person to go and rest, Gu Lin breathed a slight sigh of relief. However, he had just taken his medicine and was feeling a bit sleepy.
So, the slightly sickly young man lay down on the bed, propped up his head on a soft pillow, and drifted off to sleep.
.
Gu Lin dressed himself up almost like a snowball, and only stepped out of the house after confirming that he felt no cold at all.
He looked at Sister Zhao, who was busy in the woodshed, and went in to say, "Sister Zhao, the New Year is coming soon. Let's find some time to go buy New Year's goods."
Upon hearing Gu Lin's voice, Zhao's wife immediately turned around and said, "You've only just recovered from your illness, so don't even think about going out for a stroll."
Gu Lin widened his eyes and said, "Sister-in-law, my illness was cured three months ago. It was because you and Xiao Hao were worried and said I should rest a little longer that I stayed at home. Otherwise, I would have gone out long ago."
Three months ago, Gu Lin was playing around and didn't take proper precautions to keep warm while building a snowman outside. He developed a fever that night and took medicine on and off for more than ten days before he started to get better.
Gu Lin's illness, which should have healed long ago, was forced to stay at home for three months to recover due to the caution of Zheng Hao and Zhao's wife.
He had been holding back for a long time, and today, hearing the sound of cannons outside, he finally couldn't hold back any longer.
Gu Lin reasoned with Zhao's wife: "I'm all better now. Look at me, you've made my face so round in these three months. If I go out now, who would believe that I had a serious illness?"
"Go away, go away! You can't keep your mouth shut, always talking about illnesses." Zhao's wife scolded angrily, but she turned her head to look at the young man next to her. She saw that his originally thin, palm-sized oval face had gained a lot of weight after three months of nourishing soup. His face was round and rosy. He was probably in better shape than any pregnant woman who had the best postpartum care within a ten-mile radius.
Zhao's wife was delighted to see him. She couldn't resist pinching Gu Lin's soft, tender cheek, and chuckled under his reproachful gaze, "You silly boy, you forgot you even have a shop after you went out. We'll go out to buy New Year's goods after the 20th, and then we can go back to the village on the way."
Hearing that he could go out, even though it would still be ten days or so, Gu Lin was overjoyed because at least there was something to look forward to: "Okay, I'll go to the shop to help this afternoon."
"Oh dear." Seeing that Gu Lin was acting on impulse, Aunt Zhao quickly said, "You should rest well at home. The doctor said you are weak, especially in winter and spring. You need to take good care of yourself. What you need to do now is to get your body in good shape before next year."
"Think about Zheng. When you had a fever that day, he didn't say anything, but he was quite frightened. His face was gloomy for several days in a row."
Upon hearing Zhao's words, Gu Lin's initial eagerness vanished.
Forget it, I can go out and have fun anytime. I should focus on getting better first, so as not to worry the people around me.
