Chapter 29 "Your Highness, are you really going to let Wan'er down?"
Lin Xiaoqian returned to her familiar boudoir. Exhausted, she didn't care about anything at the moment. She went straight to the bed and lay down on it. Her posture was incredibly unrestrained, completely lacking the reserved demeanor of a well-bred young lady.
Seeing this, Xiaodie was taken aback at first, then couldn't help but cover her mouth and chuckle. She tiptoed to the bedside and looked at Lin Xiaoqian, saying, "Miss, you can finally relax. These past few days of running around have really worn you out." As she spoke, she tried to help Lin Xiaoqian take off her shoes and socks so that she could rest more comfortably.
Lin Xiaoqian slightly opened her eyes, watching Xiaodie's busy figure, and a warm feeling welled up in her heart. "Xiaodie, it's so good to have you here. If you hadn't been by my side all this time, I really wouldn't know what to do."
Xiaodie raised her head, her face beaming with a bright smile. "Miss, what are you saying? I am yours in life and in death, so naturally I will always be by your side. Please rest well, and I will prepare some hot water for you so you can take a bath and relax."
Lin Xiaoqian nodded gently, and after Xiaodie turned and left, she closed her eyes again. Memories of the journey flashed through her mind: the terror of being kidnapped by bandits, the battle of wits with them, the hardships and difficulties of controlling the floods, and the tension and determination when pleading her case before the Emperor. All of this replayed in her mind like a revolving lantern.
She knew that after this experience, she was no longer the weak woman who only knew how to compose poetry, paint, and do embroidery in her boudoir. She had witnessed the wickedness and kindness of the world and understood the responsibilities and mission she bore. Although the road ahead was still full of unknowns and challenges, she was no longer afraid, but filled with courage and determination to face them.
Inside the Su residence, a tense atmosphere permeated the silence. Su Wan'er's face was haggard, her eyes filled with worry and concern. She had been weeping for days, worried about the Ninth Prince's safety. Her once beautiful eyes were now swollen and red, tears streaming down her face like broken beads, soaking her clothes.
She often stayed alone in the backyard, the surrounding vibrant flowers and beautiful scenery appearing bleak to her. Whenever her thoughts drifted back to the happy times she had spent with the prince, her heart felt as if it had been struck by a heavy hammer, and pain spread throughout her. Those past laughter and tender gazes had now become sharp blades piercing her heart. "Your Highness, where are you now? Are you well?" she murmured softly, her voice filled with helplessness and longing.
Seeing Su Wan'er's dejected appearance from behind, Su Yao'er first sneered disdainfully. The laughter was sharp and piercing, as if it would shatter the oppressive air.
Immediately afterwards, she walked over with light, swaying steps, a sarcastic smile on her face, and teased, "Sister, look at you, as if you've lost the whole world without the prince. Do you think you're the prince's only one? He's probably having a good time with someone else right now."
Su Wan'er's face was streaked with tears, her pitiful appearance truly making it hard not to feel pity for her. She sobbed again, gently wiping away the tears from the corners of her eyes with a handkerchief, helplessly pursing her lips, then sighed softly and said gently, "What are you saying? Don't talk nonsense." Although there was a hint of disdain in her words, her slightly trembling voice betrayed the panic in her heart.
Su Yao'er immediately burst into laughter, her laughter filled with schadenfreude. She took a few steps forward, leaned closer to Su Wan'er, and said mysteriously, "Sister, I'm not making this up. I saw the Ninth Prince in the capital today, and he's back safely."
Upon hearing this, Su Wan'er's previously dim eyes instantly lit up, her face filled with excitement and joy. She grabbed Su Yao'er's arm and asked eagerly, "Really? The Prince has really returned? Thank goodness, God bless him, it's good that the Prince is safe and sound." Her heart was filled with joy, as if the gloom that had shrouded her for many days had been dispelled, and she was full of vitality, eagerly anticipating seeing the Prince again soon.
However, seeing her like this, Su Yao'er's smile widened, but a hint of malice flashed in her eyes as she added, "Sister, don't be so happy yet. I also saw that the Prince was with Lin Qianqian. They were chatting and laughing, and they looked so intimate."
Upon hearing this, Su Wan'er was struck dumb, her body stiffening abruptly. The smile on her face froze instantly, replaced by disbelief and utter heartbreak. She released Su Yao'er's arm, staggered back a few steps, her lips trembling slightly. After a long while, she managed to squeeze out a sentence: "You... are you telling the truth?" Her voice was already choked with sobs, and her eyes were brimming with tears, as if she had fallen from the clouds to the bottom of a valley, her heart feeling as if it had been ripped apart.
Seeing Su Wan'er's distraught and heartbroken state, Su Yao'er felt even more smug, thinking that she had finally gotten her revenge and made her usually arrogant older sister suffer.
She crossed her arms and began to mutter sarcastically, "Sister, don't be too sad. After all, Lin Qianqian is the rightful princess consort of the Ninth Prince. Their relationship was bound to happen sooner or later! You shouldn't be so delusional and keep hoping for the prince's return, lest you end up heartbroken, hehe~"
Having said that, she deliberately raised her chin and strode ahead of Su Wan'er with a smug look on her face, like a victorious rooster. After walking for a while, she deliberately swayed her body and swaggered away, laughing loudly. The laughter echoed in the quiet backyard, sounding particularly jarring, as if she wanted to trample on Su Wan'er's last shred of dignity.
Su Wan'er was left standing there, stunned, her face ashen, her body trembling uncontrollably. Su Yao'er's words echoed in her mind, each one like a cold knife piercing her heart. Tears streamed down her cheeks, yet she remained oblivious. All her joy had vanished in an instant, leaving only endless despair and bitterness. She couldn't believe that the prince she so deeply loved was so intimate with another man, and in a perfectly legitimate way. At that moment, she felt as if the sky were falling, the whole world had turned gray and lifeless, and she didn't know what to do.
[Your Highness, are you really going to let Wan'er down?! Waaaaah...]
