Chapter 75 The Chase
Chapter 75 The Chase
"Hello? This is Yusaku Kudo. Is this Officer Mair? Someone at our party has been shot and killed by a sniper. The killer is on the rooftop of an apartment building 800 yards west of here, and he hasn't left yet!"
Yusaku Kudo hid behind a pillar and called the police. As soon as he finished speaking, he noticed that the other side had stopped attacking him.
Officer Meyer, who was on the other end of the phone, had naturally heard of Yusaku Kudo's reputation, and immediately organized several teams of police officers to rush to the place Yusaku Kudo mentioned.
Kudo Yusaku gritted his teeth. He didn't want the other person to leave right after he finished speaking, so he tried to peek out from behind the pillar. But even when he was fully out, no bullets hit him.
"Officer Mair, please don't hang up. The killer is about to leave that building. If you go there now to intercept him, you can catch him!" Kudo Yusaku continued, picking up the phone.
"Mr. Kudo, we're almost downstairs."
Since the police station was quite close to the building, Officer Meyer and his team arrived downstairs in less than two minutes.
Just as Bai Yexiu put the sniper rifle into his guitar case, he caught a glimpse of a group of police officers rushing to the building downstairs.
Wow, that's really fast! It's definitely Yusaku Kudo.
Bai Yexiu glanced at Kudo Yusaku standing by the window of the building across the street, then slung his bag over his shoulder and left the sniping location.
"Sir, there was a figure on the top floor just now!" A sharp-eyed policeman spotted the unusual activity on the top floor, but by then Bai Yexiu had already jogged away from the top floor.
"Quick, after them!" Officer Mair led half of his men into the building.
However, Officer Meyer sent people to search everywhere, but they couldn't find a single trace of them.
"Three minutes have passed. Could they have already left the building?" Officer Mair suddenly realized.
Officer Meyer raised his walkie-talkie. Just as he was about to give orders to his men, he heard a strange noise coming from the radio, as if one of his men had slammed the walkie-talkie to the ground.
Can't these brats take a little care of their walkie-talkies?!
Just seconds before Officer Mair was cursing in his mind, Bai Yexiu jumped down from the air conditioner unit platform on the second floor and landed lightly between two policemen guarding the back door of the building.
"Surprise!"
Before the two police officers could react, a large cloud of white powder filled the air, obscuring their vision and causing them to feel a metallic taste in their throats, before they collapsed limply to the ground.
Bai Yexiu stomped on the two policemen's walkie-talkies one by one, then slowly left the scene.
However, Bai Yexiu did not leave immediately, but went to a building next door...
Officer Mair looked at the empty rooftop with great frustration, picked up the phone and said regretfully to Yusaku Kudo, "He's elusive, we can't find him at all."
“No, he’s in the building next door.” Yusaku Kudo stared through binoculars at a figure on the top floor of the building on the other side. “He’s also carrying a rather large bag on his back.”
Because of the distance, Yusaku Kudo couldn't see what the figure looked like, but he was certain that the figure was carrying a bag on its back.
Upon hearing this, Officer Meyer quickly led his men to the building next door.
Bai Yexiu stood on the rooftop, watching the police rushing towards his building below. He opened his guitar case and took out a bag from it.
……
"Quick!" Officer Mair, who was leading a group of junior police officers to the top floor, kicked open the iron door to the rooftop, but slipped and fell to the ground as soon as he took a step.
"Damn it, where did these coffee beans come from!" Officer Mair gritted his teeth and picked up the coffee beans that had just made him slip on the ground.
While Officer Meyer was cursing viciously, our culprit was whistling and leisurely walking down the stairs.
Bai Yexiu has always liked the structure of certain buildings—the air conditioning outdoor unit platform.
This platform is incredibly convenient for him.
He had just climbed over the railing to an air conditioner unit platform on the side of the building, and then jumped through the window into the building's stairwell.
Because of the high-rise buildings here, usually one building next to another, he could move along the side of the building using the air conditioner unit platform without being seen.
At the scene of the murder, everyone at the banquet was taken to another floor for questioning by police officers from the Metropolitan Police Department, leaving only Yusaku Kudo with binoculars searching for the sniper.
But he had been looking here for several minutes, and apart from seeing a figure flash by a few minutes ago, he had not found any other clues.
"Mr. Kudo, I'm sorry, we lost the person and were tricked by the murderer."
Officer Meyer rubbed his still-aching buttocks and said through gritted teeth.
……
Nighttime, New York streets.
The Kudo couple walked side by side down the street, one with a serious expression and the other with a worried look.
"It's strange, really. I've been keeping an eye on that building the whole time. Inspector Meyer came up from the rooftop door. If the murderer also left through that door, wouldn't he have run right into Inspector Meyer?" Kudo Yusaku was completely baffled.
"Honey, could the murderer have jumped off a building?" Yukiko asked tentatively.
“That’s also impossible. No bodies were found in the two buildings the killer passed through, except for two drugged police officers at the back door of the building that was the initial sniping location.” Kudo Yusaku stroked his chin, analyzing the clues of this sniping incident.
Just as Kudo Yusaku was stroking his chin in deep thought, he seemed to see something and suddenly looked up.
A young man in black carrying a guitar case was walking towards them on the zebra crossing. The young man was handsome, but his skin was very pale, as if he were seriously ill.
The boy walked past Yusaku Kudo with a blank expression, completely ignoring the couple's gazes upon him.
At this moment, Bai Yexiu's inner thoughts were: Exciting!
“Honey, that child looks sick…” Yukiko watched Shiroyasu walk away, her eyes filled with pity.
Kudo Yusaku also watched the boy walk away, his brows furrowed.
Guitar bag...and...
He looked in the direction the boy had come from and suddenly froze.
Isn't this the direction of those two buildings? Plus, he could vaguely see through his binoculars that the killer was carrying a rather large bag…
Thinking of this, Yusaku Kudo quickly chased after the boy, trying to call out to him, "Wait a minute!"
The boy, who was more than ten meters away from him, seemed not to have heard him at all and turned left into another street.
When Kudo Yusaku ran to the intersection, he couldn't find the boy anywhere; it was as if he had vanished into thin air.
