Chapter 162 There are spies in the court
Nangong Yifeng's eyes lit up. "Really? That's wonderful! Xuewei, you're so kind!"
Gu Ye frowned, about to say something, when Murong Xuewei gently tugged at his sleeve and whispered, "Don't worry, I'll keep an eye on him. Besides, we still need his help to catch the spies."
Gu Ye hesitated for a moment, then finally nodded. "Okay. But you need to be careful."
Murong Xuewei smiled. "Don't worry, I will."
And so, Murong Xuewei led Nangong Yifeng out of the General's Mansion. The two strolled along the streets of the capital, Nangong Yifeng looking around with great interest.
"Xuewei," Nangong Yifeng suddenly said, "do you really love General Gu?"
Murong Xuewei was startled, but remained outwardly calm. "Nangong Yifeng, why do you always ask this question?"
Nangong Yifeng shrugged. "I'm just curious. You know, a woman like you should have better options."
Murong Xuewei sneered, "Like you?"
Nangong Yifeng waved his hand, "Don't misunderstand, that's not what I meant. It's just that I always felt you and General Gu were from two different worlds, and no matter how I looked at it, you two shouldn't have ended up together."
Murong Xuewei was silent for a moment, then said softly, "Nangong Yifeng, everyone's feelings are complicated. You don't understand what happened between Gu Ye and me, so please don't judge so easily."
Looking at Murong Xuewei's profile, Nangong Yifeng suddenly sighed, "Xuewei, do you know? Actually, I fell in love with you the first time I saw you three years ago."
Murong Xuewei stopped and turned to look at Nangong Yifeng. "What did you say?"
Nangong Yifeng gave a wry smile. "It means exactly what it says. I was attracted to you when I first met you three years ago. However, I knew you didn't feel the same way about me, so I never said anything."
Murong Xuewei didn't know how to respond. She had never imagined that Nangong Yifeng would have such feelings for her.
Nangong Yifeng continued, "So, when I heard you married General Gu, I was truly surprised. I always thought a woman like you wouldn't marry so easily."
Murong Xuewei took a deep breath. "Young Master Nangong, let bygones be bygones. Now, I am Gu Ye's wife, and that will not change."
Nangong Yifeng nodded. "I understand. I just wanted you to know that if you ever need help, I'll be there for you."
Looking into Nangong Yifeng's sincere eyes, Murong Xuewei felt a mix of emotions. She knew she couldn't accept Nangong Yifeng's kindness, but she couldn't bear to hurt him.
Just then, a commotion arose from the end of the street. A group of soldiers were seen searching house to house.
"What happened?" Murong Xuewei asked, frowning.
A passerby whispered, "I heard they're searching for spies from the Nanzhao Kingdom."
Murong Xuewei and Nangong Yifeng exchanged a glance, both seeing wariness in each other's eyes.
“Let’s go back,” Murong Xuewei said. “Things seem more complicated than we thought.”
The two exchanged a glance, then quickly turned and walked towards the general's mansion.
A sense of unease welled up in Murong Xuewei's heart. She keenly sensed that there must be some conspiracy behind this search.
Upon returning to the General's Mansion, Murong Xuewei immediately went to find Gu Ye. She hurried towards the study, but heard voices coming from inside as she stood at the door.
Murong Xuewei was about to knock on the door when she heard a familiar voice—it was her cousin, Murong Yuxuan.
Murong Xuewei hesitated for a moment, then gently knocked on the door.
"Come in," Gu Ye's voice came from inside.
Murong Xuewei pushed open the door and saw Gu Ye and Murong Yuxuan sitting at the desk, discussing something in hushed tones.
Upon seeing her enter, the two immediately stopped talking.
"Xuewei, you're back." Gu Ye stood up, a slight smile on his face. "Is there something you need?"
Murong Xuewei took a deep breath and briefly recounted what she had just seen on the street.
She deliberately observed Gu Ye and Murong Yuxuan's reactions, but found that the two did not seem surprised.
"You knew about this all along?" Murong Xuewei asked, frowning.
Gu Ye and Murong Yuxuan exchanged a glance, and the latter nodded slightly.
“We just received news,” Gu Ye explained, “that the Emperor has ordered a thorough investigation into the spies from the Nanzhao Kingdom. But we don’t yet know the specifics.”
Just then, Nangong Yifeng walked in. He was about to speak when he saw Murong Yuxuan and froze on the spot.
"Brother Yu Xuan?" Nangong Yifeng said in surprise, "What are you doing here?"
Murong Xuewei's eyes sharpened; she hadn't expected that Nangong Yifeng would know Murong Yuxuan.
Just as she was about to ask, Gu Ye suddenly interrupted them.
"Brother Nangong, did you see the search on the street just now?" Gu Ye asked, a warning glint in his eyes.
Nangong Yifeng seemed to understand something and immediately replied, "Yes, the situation is indeed very urgent. We need to discuss countermeasures quickly."
Although Murong Xuewei sensed something was amiss, now was clearly not the time to press for answers. She focused her attention on the current crisis and described the situation on the street to Gu Ye in detail.
"The streets are swarming with soldiers, searching everyone indiscriminately," Murong Xuewei said, her brow furrowed. "Such a large-scale search might alert the real spies. They've probably already hidden themselves away."
After listening, Gu Ye nodded solemnly. "That's true. This approach not only fails to catch the real spies, but also causes public panic."
“I don’t understand,” Murong Xuewei said, puzzled. “Why would the Emperor suddenly order such a search? This makes no sense at all.”
A brief silence fell over the room. Everyone was pondering the answer to this question.
Murong Xuewei broke the silence first: "Could it be that the Emperor is eager to gain merit and wants to catch the spy as soon as possible?"
Gu Ye shook his head, his brows furrowed. "No, this isn't like the Emperor's style. Besides, I already clearly advised in my previous memorial not to alert the enemy."
"That's strange," Murong Yuxuan said thoughtfully, "Could it be that the memorial didn't reach the Emperor?"
This speculation put everyone on alert. Murong Xuewei's heart sank. If even memorials submitted to the Emperor could be intercepted, then the situation in the palace was probably worse than they imagined.
“It’s possible that a spy intercepted it halfway,” Murong Yuxuan added, a shrewd glint in his eyes.
Gu Ye pondered for a moment, then suddenly made a decision: "I will write another memorial and submit it. If this memorial is also intercepted, it will confirm our suspicions."
Murong Xuewei felt a surge of warmth in her heart as she looked at Gu Ye's resolute expression. She knew that this decision was not only to uncover the truth, but also involved taking a huge risk. If the memorial had indeed been intercepted by spies, Gu Ye's situation would become even more dangerous.
“I agree to the plan,” Nangong Yifeng said, “but we must be extremely careful. If there are indeed spies lurking in the palace, they will certainly be on high alert for any suspicious activity.”
Murong Yuxuan shook his head: "No, I think quite the opposite. Not only should we not conceal the matter of the memorial, but we should also send it out in a grand and public manner."
