Chapter 156 The Assassin Leader Becomes Wary
Chapter 156 The Assassin Leader Becomes Wary
As the sun set, an ordinary horse-drawn carriage slowly came to a stop in front of the inn.
The carriage curtain was lifted, and a man and a woman stepped out of the carriage.
The man and woman were none other than Murong Xuewei and Gu Ye in disguise.
Murong Xuewei frowned slightly, secretly planning her next move.
Gu Ye glanced around warily and whispered, "Be careful, don't arouse suspicion."
Murong Xuewei nodded, and the two pretended to be ordinary tourists, casually walking into the inn.
The inn was bustling with activity as diners enjoyed their dinner.
Murong Xuewei's eyes searched through the crowd and quickly locked onto her target.
In a corner, Nangong Yifeng and Liuli were surrounded by several men with unfriendly expressions.
Murong Xuewei and Gu Ye exchanged a glance and walked tacitly to another table.
The waiter greeted them with a smile: "What would you two like to eat?"
Gu Ye casually ordered a few dishes, while Murong Xuewei ordered a pot of wine.
The dishes were served quickly, and Murong Xuewei picked up her wine glass and took a small sip.
Murong Xuewei suddenly frowned and exclaimed, "This wine is truly awful!"
While everyone was focused on eating, Murong Xuewei's voice caught the attention of the assassins.
Murong Xuewei was overjoyed, knowing that the plan was beginning to work.
Murong Xuewei stood up unsteadily and walked towards the assassins' table.
"Tell me, is your wine good?" Murong Xuewei asked, pretending to be drunk.
A flicker of wariness crossed the assassin leader's eyes, and he said coldly, "Madam, please have some self-respect."
Murong Xuewei chuckled inwardly, but outwardly remained unyielding.
"We're all江湖儿女 (people of the martial arts world), why bother with all that fancy stuff? Let me try your wine and see how it tastes."
Murong Xuewei waved her hand dismissively, reached for the assassin leader's wine glass, and deliberately leaned forward.
The assassin leader grabbed her wrist and roared, "Are you looking for death?"
Gu Ye immediately rushed forward and shouted sternly, "Release my wife!"
Seeing that Gu Ye was also a trained fighter, the assassins all placed their hands on their swords.
In the chaos, Murong Xuewei secretly sprinkled sleeping pills into the assassins' food.
Her movements were so fast that no one noticed her subtle actions.
Murong Xuewei gave Nangong Yifeng a look, and Nangong Yifeng hurriedly stepped in to act as a peacemaker.
"Don't be impulsive, don't be impulsive. We're all just trying to make a living, it's not easy for anyone. Harmony brings wealth, harmony brings wealth."
As he spoke, he picked up the wine that Murong Xuewei had just drugged and handed it to the assassin leader.
"After drinking this glass of wine, let's all talk things out."
He then handed Murong Xuewei a glass of wine that hadn't been laced with any drugs. "Madam," he said, "our wine is just what the shopkeeper serves; it's nothing special. If you'd like some, I'll pay; I'll ask the shopkeeper to bring you a whole jar."
The waiter and other customers also rushed over to dissuade them.
"Yes! Harmony brings wealth."
Murong Xuewei took the opportunity to retreat behind Gu Ye, pretending to be aggrieved.
She secretly gave Gu Ye a look.
Gu Ye reached out and took the wine glass from Nangong Yifeng's hand. "It's all thanks to this gentleman's eloquence. For his sake, let's let this matter rest."
Before leaving, Gu Ye turned back to the assassins and said sternly, "You're all men, so if you're out in the world, learn a thing or two from this brother."
“You…” One of the assassins was provoked by Gu Ye’s words and prepared to draw his knife, but was held down by the assassin leader.
"Yes, yes, yes, we're new to this world too, and this is our first time dealing with people. We hope this brother will forgive us."
Murong Xuewei breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that the first step of the plan had succeeded.
After Gu Ye and Murong Xuewei left, the assassin leader sat down again.
The assassin leader snorted coldly and told his men, "Finish eating and leave quickly."
Nangong Yifeng and Liuli kept their heads down, neither of them touching the dishes or wine on the table, and just kept eating.
As night deepened, the inn gradually quieted down.
Murong Xuewei and Gu Ye quietly entered Nangong Yifeng's room.
Nangong Yifeng stepped forward with delight and whispered, "You've finally arrived."
Liuli breathed a sigh of relief, her eyes filled with tears.
"Madam, you've finally arrived."
Murong Xuewei wiped away Liuli's tears and asked anxiously, "Are you alright? Are you hurt?"
Nangong Yifeng shook his head and said with a wry smile, "It's alright for now, but I don't know where they're taking us."
Gu Ye said in a deep voice, "We need to find a way to get you out of here as soon as possible."
Murong Xuewei suddenly thought of something and said to Nangong Yifeng, "No, we can't just leave like this."
Liuli looked at Murong Xuewei in confusion, "Why, Madam?"
Murong Xuewei stared at Nangong Yifeng seriously and asked, "Nangong Yifeng, can you still get information from them?"
Nangong Yifeng nodded and asked, "What do you want to know?"
Murong Xuewei lowered her voice: "I want to know if they've sent news of your capture back to the capital."
Gu Ye added, "And their methods of contacting the capital."
Murong Xuewei glanced at Gu Ye and nodded in agreement.
Nangong Yifeng pondered for a moment, then nodded and said, "I understand, I will give it a try."
Liuli looked at Nangong Yifeng with concern and whispered, "Young Master, be careful."
Murong Xuewei looked at Liuli with some confusion. When did Liuli and Nangong Yifeng become so close?
Could something unusual have happened in the last few days?
However, since Liuli didn't bring it up herself, Murong Xuewei didn't ask.
The four discussed the matter for a while longer before Murong Xuewei and Gu Ye quietly left.
As dawn broke, Nangong Yifeng got up, took some wine, and went to find the assassin leader.
Nangong Yifeng was filled with trepidation, unsure if the method he used last time would work this time.
The assassin leader's face immediately darkened when he saw him arrive.
He had never been drunk since he became an assassin, but he actually got drunk the last time he drank with Nangong Yifeng.
Although he asked his subordinates after waking up and they said nothing he shouldn't have, being drunk is not something an assassin should do.
So when the assassin leader saw Nangong Yifeng coming over with wine again, he became a little wary.
"What is Young Master Nangong planning to do now?" the assassin leader asked warily.
Nangong Yifeng gave a helpless smile: "I couldn't sleep last night, so I wanted to find someone to drink with to relieve my boredom."
Nangong Yifeng secretly prayed that the assassin leader would fall for the trick again.
The assassin leader sneered, "It's getting late, let's save this wine for next time! Hurry up and pack our things, we're leaving."
Nangong Yifeng's heart sank. Was this person becoming wary of him?
Nangong Yifeng had no choice but to put away the wine, go back to wake Liuli, and prepare to set off.
Murong Xuewei and Gu Ye saw the group of assassins leave and quietly followed them.
Under the blazing sun, a group of people walked along a rugged mountain path.
Nangong Yifeng was panting heavily, and fine beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
Along the way, Nangong Yifeng kept looking back, trying to see if Gu Ye and Murong Xuewei had followed.
The assassin leader seemed to have noticed his actions. "Why is Young Master Nangong looking back? Could it be that someone hasn't caught up yet?"
Nangong Yifeng's heart skipped a beat. Had he been seen through?
Suddenly, Nangong Yifeng had a flash of inspiration and said to the assassin leader, "We've been out since early morning, and we've walked all this way. It's so hot, can we take a break?"
The assassin leader said somewhat impatiently, "There's no time to rest. Once we reach the capital, you can rest however you like, young master."
Nangong Yifeng feigned weakness and said, "You won't even let me rest for a bit? What if I get heatstroke? How will you explain this back in the capital?"
Nangong Yifeng prayed silently, hoping that this reason would convince the assassin leader.
After pondering for a moment, the assassin leader felt that Nangong Yifeng's words made some sense and reluctantly nodded in agreement.
Nangong Yifeng breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that his opportunity had arrived.
The group stopped to rest under the shade of a tree.
Nangong Yifeng leaned against a tree trunk and whispered to Liuli, "Go find Miss Murong and the others."
Liuli nodded, pretended to go find water, and quietly slipped into the woods.
