Chapter 70: Foreign Invasion
Chapter 70: Foreign Invasion
That day, Yunxi was sitting on the edge of the kang in her room, carefully sorting her clothes with her head buried in her chest. Suddenly, a chaotic noise came from outside. Her thin eyebrows furrowed slightly, and she gently put down her work, slowly stood up, and walked towards the door.
"Chun Tao, why is it so noisy outside?" Yun Xi asked loudly, with a hint of doubt in his voice.
Chun Tao came trotting over, her chest heaving with anxiety, and she gasped for breath as she said, "Madam, this is bad! I heard there's an invasion from the border, and the whole court is alarmed!"
When Yunxi heard this, her heart suddenly tightened, and she quickly asked, "Is this news true?"
Chuntao nodded her head quickly, saying anxiously, "It's absolutely true, ma'am! The rumors are all over the streets. They say that the foreign enemy is so aggressive that they have already conquered several cities in a row!"
Yunxi's face suddenly became heavy, and he turned around and quickly walked back into the house.
"What should I do?" Yunxi muttered, twisting the corners of her clothes with her hands.
At this time, the prince strode into the yard with a serious expression.
"Yunxi, this matter is of no small importance." The prince said, his brows tightly knitted into a knot, and his hands behind his back unconsciously clenched into fists.
Yunxi hurried forward, her face filled with anxiety: "Your Highness, does the court have any countermeasures?"
The prince shook his head and sighed heavily: "I don't know yet, but I believe there will be some arrangements."
Everyone in the mansion had gathered, all looking worried. The Third Aunt, dressed in a flowered dress, anxiously tugged at her handkerchief, her eyes wide open as she asked in shock, "Why did this foreign enemy suddenly invade?"
The fourth concubine was dressed in plain clothes, her brows furrowed so tightly that they could kill a fly. She sighed and said, "Who knows? This is really a disaster that has come from the sky."
The eldest daughter was dressed in silk, but she didn't care about her appearance. She paced back and forth, looking anxious: "What should we do if the war goes badly?"
The second young lady was a little younger. She bit her lip, her eyes slightly red. "Don't talk nonsense. The court will definitely send troops to resist."
The prince looked at everyone and raised his voice: "Don't panic, our mansion must also be prepared."
Yunxi nodded vigorously, her eyes firm: "Your Highness is right."
As he was speaking, the housekeeper from the mansion hurried over. He was out of breath, his forehead covered with sweat, and the flesh on his face trembled. "Your Highness, Madam, we just received news that the court has summoned the ministers to discuss this matter."
Upon hearing this, the prince immediately stepped forward, frowning and looking sternly: "Do you know the result of the discussion?"
The butler panted and shook his head: "I don't know yet."
Yunxi pursed her lips, thought for a moment, and said, "Your Highness, why not send someone to inquire about it?"
The prince replied, "Okay, I'll leave this matter to you."
Yunxi immediately called out to the maid beside her: "Cui'er, go and call Guard Li." Cui'er responded and ran away in a hurry.
Soon, Guard Li arrived. He was tall and handsome, with a heroic look on his face. Yunxi whispered a few words to him, and Guard Li bowed and said, "Madam, rest assured. I will fulfill my mission."
After saying that, he turned around and left quickly.
Yunxi turned to look at the others and said, "Everyone, don't panic. Our mansion has gone through many ups and downs over the years, and we will definitely be able to get through this time."
After hearing this, the third concubine couldn't help but mutter: "Will this work? What if..." Before she finished speaking, the fourth concubine pulled her sleeve.
Yunxi continued, "Everyone, just do what you need to do and stop thinking about it."
The eldest and second daughters looked at each other and walked away silently.
Yunxi finally breathed a sigh of relief, thinking to herself, I hope the imperial court can come up with a response plan as soon as possible to keep this area safe.
Yunxi immediately gave orders, asking his confidants to inquire about the court's movements.
After a few days, the confidant came back to report.
"Madam, the court has decided to send troops, but the leader has not yet been determined." The confidant was running out of breath, with beads of sweat on his face, and he spoke while panting.
Upon hearing this, Yunxi frowned slightly and looked at the prince anxiously, "Prince, who do you think will lead the army?"
The prince sat on the chair, his hand touching his chin, his eyes deep. After thinking for a moment, he said, "It's hard to say. Perhaps it was those veterans who had been through many battles."
After saying that, he sighed heavily.
Over the past few days, the entire Marquisate was filled with a tense atmosphere. Yunxi was busy, his steps hurried, his expression serious.
She was wearing plain clothes and her hair was simply tied up in a bun, but she exuded a sense of neatness.
"Xia He, count the food in the warehouse just in case." Yun Xi gave instructions while also busy checking other material reserves in the mansion.
Xia He quickly responded, "Yes, ma'am." Xia He ran to the warehouse in a hurry, her steps very fast.
The prince frequently met with the ministers in the court to discuss countermeasures. Every time he went out, he looked solemn and hurried, and when he returned, he looked exhausted.
One day, the prince came back from outside, his face so gloomy that water could drip out of it. As soon as he entered the mansion, he went straight to the main hall without even changing his clothes.
Seeing the prince like this, Yunxi's heart skipped a beat. She hurriedly followed him and asked, "What's wrong, prince?"
The prince sank down on a chair, rubbing his temples with both hands, his brows furrowed into the shape of a "川" character, and sighed, "The foreign enemy was very fierce, and our army was losing ground."
Yunxi was startled, her face turned pale instantly, and her voice trembled: "What should I do?"
Just when everyone was worried, an imperial decree came from the court, ordering the prince to come to the palace to meet the emperor.
The prince did not dare to delay and immediately changed into court robes and entered the palace. The court robes made the prince look even more majestic, but no one cared about that at the moment.
Yunxi was waiting anxiously in the mansion. She paced back and forth in the hall, glancing at the door from time to time.
She couldn't sit still, couldn't stand still, and the handkerchief in her hand was almost torn to pieces by her. The maids beside her didn't dare to say a word. The whole hall was so quiet that only Yunxi's footsteps could be heard.
As time passed, Yunxi's heart tightened. From time to time, she would ask the servant at the door, "Is the prince not back yet?"
The servant could only shake his head. Yunxi bit her lip and prayed silently in her heart.
Finally, the prince came back.
"Your Highness, what did the Emperor say?" Yunxi asked impatiently.
The prince frowned, his expression solemn, "The emperor ordered me to lead the army to war."
When Yunxi heard this, her face turned pale instantly and her lips trembled, "This..."
The prince quickly reached out and held Yunxi's slightly trembling hand, looking at her firmly, "Don't worry, I will definitely return victorious."
When everyone in the Marquis' Mansion learned that the prince was going to the war, they all came to see him off.
The Third Aunt, dressed in a gorgeous dress, wiped her tears and said in a shrill voice, "My Lord, you must return safely."
Jinxuan, a small man, clung to the corner of the prince's clothes tightly, his eyes red as he cried, "Father, please be careful."
The prince touched Jinxuan's head and nodded, "Don't worry."
Yunxi bit her lips, holding back her tears, and with trembling hands she adjusted the armor for the prince. Her hands seemed to be out of control and she couldn't do it properly.
The prince held her hand and said softly, "Madam, don't panic." Yunxi took a deep breath and then managed to put her armor into place.
"Your Highness, please take care of yourself on this journey." Yunxi's voice was choked with tears in her eyes.
The prince flung his cape and mounted his horse with a swift and graceful posture. He glanced back at the people in the mansion and shouted, "Let's go back!"
Then he kicked his horse and set off with his army.
Yunxi looked at the team going away and prayed silently in his heart.
