Chapter 59 Trap
Chapter 59 Trap
As the pages of the book flashed by at breakneck speed, the astonished expression on Ji Xingyi's face froze into a still image.
"Bang." Jiang Lin closed the ancient book, preparing to take it down, but saw the shocked and stunned look on the man beside him. He couldn't help but reach out and poke the man's forehead: "Are you dumbfounded?"
“It’s not difficult. You just need to remember the key words, such as the appearance of characters like Green Xia Li, Theresa, and witch, and then find the paragraphs where these characters appear. You don’t need to read the whole book.” Jiang Lin explained as he continued to quickly look up the information.
Ji Xingyi watched quietly, a sense of indescribable loss lingering in her eyes.
This was the first time he had ever known that Jiang Lin possessed such extraordinary talent. How many secrets did Jiang Lin still hold that he didn't know?
Half an hour later, Jiang Lin placed all the ancient books that recorded Theresa, Green Xia Li, and the witch in front of Ji Xingyi.
Ji Xingyi picked up the middle book and read the text inside:
“My dear Miss Leah, I encountered a wanderer while crossing the dark Mocandinas Mountains.”
He said that in his youth he was a painter of some renown, and fifteen years ago he was summoned by the king to paint an adult portrait of Princess Theresa of the empire. Later, due to his drunken misbehavior, he was punished by the king and flogged. Fearing for his life, he fled the country and has been wandering ever since.
Miss Leah, am I mistaken? Princess Theresa is only twenty years old this year, isn't she? Miss Leah, he must be a drunken liar.
Ji Xingyi picked up the second book, which was a fairy tale.
"The prince's mother suddenly fell seriously ill. Guided by a wizard, the prince went deep into a mysterious forest, where he discovered a sleeping blonde girl in a sea of blue roses."
The girl's name was Green Xia Li, and she was a fairy from the forest.
Green Xia Li said that she could cure the Queen's illness, and the prince must stay by her side at all times, otherwise the prince would lose everything, including wealth, health, and family.
The prince agreed to the fairy's proposal, and they lived happily ever after.
Continuing with the third book, it reads like an unofficial historical account.
"The king went hunting and brought back a woman veiled from head to toe in black. He locked her in his bedchamber, guarded by twenty guards, not allowing even a fly to get in. From then on, every day and every night, the servants could hear passionate sounds coming from the king's bedchamber."
One of the guards, named Monsa, sneaked in while the king was away. An hour later, Monsa emerged looking satisfied. The other guards, curious, asked what kind of woman she was.
Monsa replied: "The witch." From then on, whenever the king was away, twenty guards would take turns sneaking into the palace to catch a glimpse of the witch's alluring figure.
Fifty years have passed. The king, his hair now white and his illness terminal, finds no trace of the witch's youth. The dying king, gazing upon the still-beautiful witch, cruelly orders her execution.
Ji Xingyi read several more books. The descriptions of Teresa were all about beauty and nobility, while Green Xia Li was about mystery and miracles, and the witch was much more straightforward and explicit.
In the end, Ji Xingyi couldn't bear to read any longer and closed the book, his face flushed. It wasn't that the content was too explicit, but rather that he couldn't bear to read it under Jiang Lin's gaze.
Seeing this, Jiang Lin deliberately reached out and pinched the man's reddened ear: "Why is it so red?"
Ji Xingyi quickly grabbed Jiang Lin's disruptive hand: "The information here is hard to verify, but the only thing that is certain is that the witch is indeed immortal."
After finishing their work, the two went out to check on Chen Jiangqiao. They couldn't find him; he had disappeared.
Strange, Chen Jiangqiao, whom Ji Xingyi had just woken up, didn't seem like the type to sneak away. Even if they encountered danger in the inner world, they hadn't heard a sound.
Ji Xingyi guessed, "Was Chen Jiangqiao teleported back to the surface world by the witch?"
“The witch can see everything we do in the Otherworld.” Jiang Lin pondered, “Perhaps she’s getting impatient.”
He originally intended to use this method to force Green Xia Li to show herself, but the witch was smarter than he imagined and actually kicked Chen Jiangqiao out of the inner world.
"Forget it, pushing her too far won't be good for us either," Jiang Lin sighed.
As for Chen Jiangqiao's safety, he can only hope for the best.
Ji Xingyi: "We still need to find 'The Sleeping Girl'."
The information in these books is a mixture of truth and falsehood, and it's impossible to tell for the time being. Even if they figure out the witch's origins, they can't leave without obtaining the quest items.
However, there is currently no clue that directly points to "The Sleeping Girl".
"If the girl is indeed a witch, the most likely quest item is a painting," Ji Xingyi speculated, looking at the portrait of Princess Theresa in front of him.
"Let's go." Jiang Lin turned around: "Let's go take a look at the tower."
Chen Jiangqiao explored the attic at the top of the tower, which was then a locked studio. According to Chen Jiangqiao, there was a canvas inside that he could not see the content of.
The two rushed to the rooftop, and Ji Xingyi went forward to try to open the door, but it was still locked from the inside.
"Step back." Ji Xingyi told Jiang Lin to stand further away, then raised the iron axe he had snatched from the murderous maid and used force to break down the door.
They were initially wary of the witch's power, but once they learned that the witch couldn't kill people herself, their approach to solving the problem became much simpler and more brutal.
With each swing of Ji Xing's axe, a large hole appeared in the wooden door. Suddenly, a dark figure darted out from the hole.
Ji Xingyi immediately dodged to the side, only to find it was a large black-haired rat!
"Watch out!" As soon as Jiang Lin finished speaking, a large number of rats poured out of the hole that Ji Xingyi had smashed open, like black water breaking through a dam.
Jiang Lin thought to himself, "This is bad! It's a trap! She knew we were coming here!"
Ji Xingyi grabbed Jiang Lin without hesitation and rushed downstairs: "Our guess was correct!"
Mo Xizheng was still in the library on the second floor when Ji Xingyi pulled Jiang Lin and they changed their route to escape to the guest room area on the third floor.
I intended to rush from the third-floor guest room area to the lobby, but unexpectedly, a swarm of rats appeared at the end of the corridor ahead.
Caught between two attackers, Ji Xingyi's expression changed drastically. She quickly led Jiang Lin into the nearest guest room and locked the door from the inside. Ji Xingyi glanced around the room, pulled off a sheet, and stuffed a corner into Jiang Lin's hand.
"I'll take you downstairs first."
Jiang Lin's bright eyes slightly opened, and the next second she was forcefully pushed onto the balcony by the man. Using the bed sheet as a rope, Jiang Lin successfully descended to the second-floor guest room, then looked up at the third floor, but the man was nowhere to be seen.
"Ji Xingyi!" Jiang Lin's expression changed slightly.
The door was repeatedly and forcefully pounded, the brass lock rattling like a candle flickering in the wind, on the verge of destruction.
Ji Xingyi pretended not to hear Jiang Lin's shouts, grabbed the white quilt from the bed and threw it to the door. Amid the noise, he skillfully lit a cigarette, took a graceful puff, and flicked his index finger, the sparking cigarette butt instantly igniting the quilt.
